Australia ETA Guide

The Australian Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) is an electronically held travel authorization that replaces the need for a physical visa label in your passport. It is available to passport holders of select countries for short visits.

What Is an Australia ETA?

The ETA (subclass 601) is an electronic authorization that allows eligible passport holders to travel to Australia for tourism or business purposes. It is linked electronically to your passport number and is valid for multiple visits over a 12-month period, with each stay limited to 3 months.

Eligible Countries

The Australia ETA is available to passport holders of Brunei, Canada, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and the United States, as well as several European passport holders. Citizens of countries not eligible for the ETA may need to apply for an eVisitor (subclass 651) or a standard visitor visa.

Requirements

  • Valid passport from an ETA-eligible country
  • No tuberculosis diagnosis
  • No criminal convictions resulting in a sentence of 12 months or more
  • A smartphone with the Australian ETA app installed
  • Credit or debit card for fee payment

Application Process

  • Download the Australian ETA app from the App Store or Google Play.
  • Create a new application and scan your passport using your phone's NFC capability.
  • Answer the eligibility questions and provide personal details.
  • Take a selfie photo for identity verification.
  • Pay the AUD 20 service fee.
  • Receive a notification with the outcome, usually within minutes to 24 hours.

Fees

The Australia ETA has a service charge of AUD 20 (approximately USD 13). This fee is non-refundable and is charged per application regardless of whether the ETA is approved or declined.

Processing Time

Most ETA applications are processed within minutes. In some cases, additional checks may take up to 24 hours or longer. It is recommended to apply at least 72 hours before your intended departure.

Validity and Conditions

The ETA is valid for 12 months from the date of issue or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. You may make multiple visits during this period, with each stay limited to a maximum of 3 months. The ETA does not permit work in Australia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work in Australia with an ETA?

No. The ETA does not permit any form of employment. You may attend business meetings, conferences, or negotiations, but you cannot perform paid work. For employment, you need a work visa.

What is the difference between an ETA and an eVisitor?

Both are electronic travel authorizations for short visits. The ETA (subclass 601) is for passport holders of certain non-European countries, while the eVisitor (subclass 651) is for European passport holders. Both are free of charge or have a small service fee and allow stays of up to 3 months.

Do I need to print my ETA?

No. The ETA is electronically linked to your passport. Airlines and border officials can verify your ETA status through their systems. However, keeping a digital copy of your confirmation is recommended.
