The United Kingdom requires citizens of many countries to obtain a visa before travel. The Standard Visitor Visa is the most common type for tourism, business visits, and short-term study.
Types of UK Visitor Visas
- Standard Visitor Visa: For tourism, visiting family or friends, attending business meetings, or short courses. Valid for up to 6 months.
- Marriage Visitor Visa: For those traveling to the UK to get married or enter a civil partnership.
- Transit Visa: For travelers passing through the UK on the way to another country.
- Permitted Paid Engagement Visa: For invited experts coming to the UK for a specific paid engagement.
Who Needs a UK Visa?
Nationals of non-visa-exempt countries must apply for a visa before traveling to the UK. Citizens of EU/EEA countries, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, and several others can visit visa-free for up to 6 months. Some nationalities also require a transit visa even when not leaving the airport. Since Brexit, EU nationals no longer have automatic freedom of movement to the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I study in the UK with a Standard Visitor Visa?
You can take a short course of study (up to 30 days) with a Standard Visitor Visa, provided it is not the main purpose of your visit. For longer studies, you need a Student Visa.
Is the UK part of the Schengen Area?
No. The UK has never been part of the Schengen Area. A Schengen Visa does not grant entry to the UK, and a UK visa does not grant access to Schengen countries. You need separate authorizations for each.
Do I need a UK ETA instead of a visa?
The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is for visa-exempt nationals. If your nationality requires a visa for the UK, you must apply for a visa regardless of the ETA system.
