The Visa Index exists to make global travel planning simpler and more transparent. We believe that access to accurate, up-to-date visa information should be free, clear, and available to everyone — regardless of which passport they hold. Since our founding, we have helped millions of travelers from every corner of the world understand exactly what documentation they need before they pack their bags.
What We Cover
The Visa Index covers visa requirements for 195 passports across 195 destinations — more than 38,000 individual country-pair data points. For each entry, we document whether a visa is required, the type of entry permitted (visa-free, e-Visa, visa on arrival, visa required), the maximum permitted stay, and any special conditions or requirements such as health certifications, proof of onward travel, or minimum passport validity.

The Visa Index is more than a data table. Our Team
The Visa Index is maintained by a dedicated team of travel researchers, data engineers, and immigration specialists with combined experience spanning visa consultancy, international migration research, and global travel journalism. Our team members have personally traveled to more than 100 countries and understand first-hand how complex and consequential visa planning can be. Every data update goes through human review before being published.
Data Sources
Our visa requirements data is compiled from the most authoritative sources available: official government immigration portals, the IATA Travel Information Manual (TIM), embassy and consulate websites, and the Henley Passport Index dataset. Every data point is cross-referenced across multiple independent sources to minimize errors. We do not rely on user-submitted data for our core database — accuracy is our top priority.
Our Methodology
We categorize all visa requirements into six standard categories recognized by international travel authorities: Visa-Free (no visa needed), E-Visa (apply online before travel), Visa on Arrival (obtain at port of entry), Visa Required (must apply at embassy), Freedom of Movement (regional agreement), and Transit Visa Required. Data is reviewed and updated every 30 days as standard, with emergency updates issued within 24–48 hours when governments announce major policy changes.
Our Commitment to Accuracy
Visa requirements change frequently. Countries revise their policies in response to diplomatic developments, public health situations, and bilateral agreements. We run automated monitoring systems that flag potential changes across hundreds of official government sources, and our editorial team manually verifies flagged changes before updating our database. Despite these efforts, we strongly recommend confirming current requirements with the destination country's official embassy or consulate before travel, particularly for complex or high-risk itineraries.
